Privacy and Location Data

Speedometer.top reads your location only in your browser and never uploads it. This page lists the preferences kept on your device and what the host sees.

The short version
Your location is read by your own browser, used there to work out your speed and distance, and thrown away when you close the page. We never receive it, store it or share it. There are no analytics, no adverts and no user accounts. A handful of preferences stay on your device so the speedometer reopens the way you left it.

Who this covers

Everything on https://speedometer.top, run by the independent Speedometer.top project. Questions about your data can go to hello@speedometer.top and we will reply personally.

Your location

The speedometer uses the Geolocation API, a standard part of every current browser. When you press Start, your browser asks whether this site may use your location; nothing is read until you allow it, and you can withdraw permission at any time in your browser or phone settings.

Once allowed, the browser hands the page a stream of readings while it is open:

  • your position (latitude and longitude) and its accuracy,
  • your speed and direction of travel, where the device measures them,
  • your altitude, where the device provides it.

The page uses these to show your speed, heading and altitude and to add up the trip distance, top speed and average. All of that happens in your browser. Positions are kept in memory only as long as they are needed for the next calculation, never written to storage, and never sent over the network — not to us and not to anyone else. Closing or reloading the page discards them.

To work out where you are, your phone or browser may use its own location service, such as Apple's or Google's, which can combine GPS with nearby Wi-Fi networks and mobile masts. That happens between your device and that provider, under their privacy terms, and we have no access to it.

Other device features

Where your browser supports them, the speedometer also uses, entirely on your device:

  • a screen wake lock, so the display does not sleep while tracking,
  • a short beep generated by the browser when the speed alert is on,
  • the vibration motor, only if you switch on vibration for the alert,
  • full-screen display, only when you open HUD mode.

None of these send anything anywhere, and the site never asks for the microphone or camera.

What a page load reveals

Fetching a page from any website means your browser contacts a server. Along with the request go your IP address, the name and version of your browser, the time, and the page you asked for, because the server cannot send anything back without them. We do not build profiles from those details, sell them or hand them to advertisers, and your position is never part of a request.

What we do not record

  • Where you have been: no positions, routes, speeds or trip logs.
  • Who you are: there are no accounts, so no names, email addresses or passwords.
  • How you use the site: no visitor statistics, session recordings or click tracking.
  • Anything for advertisers: no ad IDs, tracking pixels or remarketing tags.
  • Sound or pictures: the site never asks for the microphone or camera.

Settings saved on your device

There are no cookies. The site keeps two small entries in your browser's localStorage:

  • theme — holds your light or dark choice after you tap the theme switch.
  • spd:settings — your speed unit, whether the speed alert is on and its limit, the beep and vibration switches, and whether HUD mode is mirrored. It contains no location data.

Only pages on this site can read them, and they stay on your device. Wipe this site's stored data in your browser to delete both and start again from the defaults.

Hosting on Cloudflare

Cloudflare keeps the site's files and delivers them to you. To protect its network and keep it fast, Cloudflare can hold short-lived records of requests, such as the IP address, the time and the address requested, and treats them according to the Cloudflare privacy policy. Those records describe page loads only and contain no location.

The references in our guides point to other sites, Apple Support and GPS.gov among them, and each of those runs under its own privacy terms.

Your rights under UK and EU law

We rely on legitimate interest to handle request data: we need it to send you pages and to keep the site secure. Location is a different matter. It is handled only on your device, after you agree to the browser's permission prompt, and we never receive it.

Under the GDPR and UK GDPR you can ask what personal data we have about you, have it fixed or erased, object to how it is used, and complain to the data protection authority where you live. With no accounts and no named records there is usually nothing on file, but write to us and we will check.

Children

The speedometer is a general-purpose tool and is not designed for children under 13. We do not knowingly collect information about anyone, child or adult, other than the page-load details explained earlier.

When this page changes

If we change how the site handles data, the date at the top moves and this page explains what is different. Analytics, advertising or any new kind of data collection would be listed here before it went live, never after.
