The exact conversion factors
Speed units are all defined from the metre and the second, so the factors between them are exact rather than measured. The converter uses these values in full:
- 1 mph = 1.609344 km/h
- The international mile is exactly 1,609.344 m.
- 1 knot = 1.852 km/h
- One nautical mile per hour; the nautical mile is exactly 1,852 m.
- 1 m/s = 3.6 km/h
- 3,600 seconds in an hour, 1,000 metres in a kilometre.
- 1 km/h = 0.621371 mph
- Divide km/h by 1.609344 to get mph.
How to convert km/h to mph in your head
Multiply by 0.6 for a quick estimate: 100 km/h is about 60 mph (62.1 more precisely). To go the other way, multiply mph by 1.6: 70 mph is about 112 km/h (112.7 more precisely). For knots, multiply by 1.85 to get km/h, or by 1.15 to get mph.
Pace and speed
Runners usually talk in pace — the time it takes to cover a kilometre or a mile — rather than speed. Pace is the inverse of speed: a pace of 5:00 per kilometre is 12 km/h, and 6:00 per kilometre is 10 km/h. Type either into the converter above and it works out the other.
